John and Edwina’s story

Friends John and Edwina share their home with a housemate in Devon supported by Carmel Care.

John and Edwina have known each other for over eight years. They previously lived together with nine others in the adjoining property to their home. The move happened a couple of years ago after the local authority had agreed they no longer required overnight support.

Edwina and John explain their story along with the support from the Service Manager, Emma Richards.

“It’s lovely to see the positive changes,” said Emma Richards. “When John first moved in, he was quiet and shy. He lived at the family home with his Mum and brother, then moved to a care home before moving here. Over time his confidence has grown and began to join in with everyone.”

John said, “I like living here, it’s homely and have got some good friends too. I enjoy going out too. Every week I go to Weatherspoon’s and order my own food; I quite like a chicken sandwich and a beer!

We all do our own shopping. I make a list and then usually go shopping on a Wednesday. It’s good having your own card to pay for things.”

Edwina explains, “John and I are good friends and like doing things together; we often go for dinner. It’s also important to do your own thing as well and see your friends. I’ve got a voluntary job at the Children’s Society. I love my books, and I’m a member of the library. My friend from church also likes reading and we pass on books to each other. She then shares them with her neighbour too. I really like reading.

We all have time with our care staff. I enjoy spending time with them, doing things I want to do and talking. They are really nice and helpful. I’ve got a lovely home and I’m really happy living here.”
