April marks Stress Awareness Month, a timely reminder for all of us to pause, reflect, and take positive steps toward improving our mental and physical wellbeing.
We support our tenants with their wellbeing in a variety of ways, and as part of this commitment, we have also been improving how we work internally. It is important to recognise that while we continue to support our tenants, we also prioritise the wellbeing of our colleagues across the organisation.
Earlier this year, we took an important step forward by forming our Health and Wellbeing Group, bringing together colleagues from across the organisation who are passionate about creating a healthier, more supportive workplace.
Strong foundations
Our new initiatives build on the strong foundations already in place, including our WPA health cash plan, fully funded by Encircle Housing for all employees. Colleagues also have access to independent wellbeing support through a mental health app, alongside Group Life Cover, which provides additional support such as bereavement and probate helplines. Further support is available through services including Crisis24 Horizon, a Virtual GP and Second Medical Opinion service, and Podplan Eldercare support.
New initiatives so far
The group has already made fantastic progress. Through collaboration and shared ideas, we identified several practical initiatives designed to support colleagues in their everyday working lives. We were delighted to officially launch these at the beginning of April, and the early feedback has been incredibly positive.
One of the standout initiatives is the introduction of our Step Up app. After a successful trial, it is now being used more widely, encouraging colleagues to be more active throughout the day. Whether it’s a quick walk during lunch or choosing the stairs over the lift, small changes can have a big impact on both physical health and stress levels. Increasing daily movement is proven to boost mood, improve energy, and reduce anxiety.
As one colleague shared: “It’s really encouraged me to get out for more walks during the day, and it’s sparked great conversations with the team about steps, goals, and getting outside more.” This sense of shared experience has helped create not only healthier habits, but also stronger connections between colleagues.
We have also focused on strengthening social connections across teams. Simple actions, such as using Teams meeting chat more interactively, have helped colleagues feel more engaged and connected, particularly in hybrid working environments. Additionally, the introduction of walking 1-2-1 meetings offers a refreshing alternative to sitting at a desk, combining meaningful conversations with the benefits of fresh air and movement.
Recognising and celebrating one another has also been a priority. Our Kudos initiative encourages colleagues to acknowledge great work and support, helping to build a positive and appreciative culture. Feeling valued is a key factor in reducing stress and improving overall wellbeing.
For those spending time in the office and those visiting, the addition of a fruit bowl provides a small but meaningful way to promote healthier choices. Easy access to nutritious snacks can support better energy levels and concentration throughout the day.
More to come
These initiatives are just the beginning. The Health and Wellbeing Group is committed to continuing this momentum, with more ideas and support planned in the coming months. It is encouraging to see how warmly these changes have been welcomed so far, and it reinforces the importance of creating an environment where wellbeing is a shared priority.
Together, we are continually building a workplace that supports healthier habits, stronger connections, and a more positive everyday experience for everyone.
